A City’s Inexorable Decline
Over the past year, Minneapolis has joined Chicago, Portland, Baltimore, Seattle, Detroit and St. Louis as cities whose futures look bleak on account of out-of-control crime. Scott wrote this afternoon about the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s tentative and belated acknowledgement that the city’s residents need to support their police department rather than interfering with attempted arrests. That would be a start, I guess.
But Minneapolis’s decline is precipitous and the hour is late. The Star Tribune itself reported this morning that Minneapolis is “bringing in outside help” from both state and federal agencies after four more people were murdered over the weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) UPDATE: Less than an hour after this story was initially published, another child was shot in Minneapolis. Local activist Kay G. Wilson identified the victim as his 6-year-old granddaughter, Aniya.
Two children are fighting for their lives after both were seriously injured by gunfire wounds to their heads just two weeks apart in north Minneapolis.
Ten-year-old Ladavionne Garrett Jr. was in the back seat of his parent’s car on April 30. And 9-year-old Trinity Smith was with friends at a birthday party on Saturday.
(The Center Square) â After another weekend of violence, Mayor Jacob Frey pushed for a safety plan to stop widespread violence, which has been rampant for more than a year. This must mark a turning point, Frey said. The ultimate goal is to make all Minneapolis neighborhoods safer.
Frey released a
14-page model for community safety and accountability days after six people were shot, including a 9-year old girl shot in the head while playing with friends on a trampoline at 8:30 p.m.
