This is the first of four pieces from a Knowledge Matters tour of school districts in Delaware, in recognition of the state’s new initiative – called DE Delivers – to encourage adoption of high quality instructional materials in its 19 districts. The tour begins in Seaford, which has seen a stunning turnaround in student achievement in a few short years. Knowledge Matters asked Kelly Carvajal Hageman, director of instruction, to write this piece. She came to the district just as it was implementing Bookworms, an English language arts curriculum that was in its infancy and being co-authored by a professor at the University of Delaware.

We’re all familiar with data correlating student achievement with family income and ethnicity. Such data, critics argue, reveal that schooling tends to sort students according to the pre-existing socioeconomic class structure and, in so doing, reproduces existing inequities. HESSCO Elder Services in Sharon is once again partnering with Mick Morgan’s Irish Pub for the ninth annual Mick Morgan’s St. Patrick’s 5K for HESSCO on March 14.
This is HESSCO’s largest fundraiser and coincides with the national March for Meals Campaign which mobilizes hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs across the country to reach out to their communities and build support, an opportunity to shed light on HESSCO’s Nutrition Program. With the assistance of nearly 700 volunteers, HESSCO packages and delivers an average of 135,000 home delivered meals each year and serves an additional 35,000 meals annually in dining room settings. Volunteer drivers not only deliver a hot, nutritious meal, but they provide a wellness check and a friendly visit. For many, this is the difference needed to maintain their dignity and independence at home.
