In the final step of a major shakeup at the top of SA's ports, East London port manager Sharon Sijako has been replaced by Lwandile Mabuza. According to a Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), it is all “part of its (TPNA) new operating model to reposition South Africa in the global market and ensure growth and sustainability".
The Border Kei Chamber of Business said it would meet Transnet over the next few weeks to build a strong economic case to fund the expansion of the East London harbour. The engagement follows a CEOs Forum meeting last Tuesday, arranged by the chamber and attended by public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan and Transnet CEO Portia Derby.
Fears of an over-dependence on car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz SA may be among the reasons for a freeze on developing East London’s harbour, Transnet CEO Portia Derby said on Tuesday. However, in a general overview, public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan said Transnet was one of the key state institutions which had suffered from the looting during state capture.
