LIT and Athlone IT have been granted Technological University status.
The new institution is expected to have a student population of up to 15,000 and open later this year, with a target date of September 1st, 2021.
Minister Simon Harris made the announcement this morning:

The Technological University is expected to employ around 1,200 people across six campuses – two in Limerick, with one also in each of Athlone, Clonmel, Ennis, and Thurles.

LIT and Atholone IT have been granted Technological Status with the new university due to open its doors in September, however concerns have been raised that the new institution has yet to have an official name.
One proposal is that it could be called the Technological University of Shannon Athlone and Limerick or TUSAL - the River Shannon being the main link between Limerick and Athlone.
However Minister Patrick O Donovan says that name could be confusing.
