MUMBAI: Bombay high court has slammed BMC for granting permission during the Covid-19 pandemic to a Navratri pandal in Dahisar (East) for celebrations organised by former corporator Prakash Darekar and patronised by his brother Pravin Darekar, opposition leader of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
A bench of Justices Shahrukh Kathawalla and Riyaz Chagla on Friday heard a petition filed by local resident Girish Mittal for direction to the R-North Ward to demolish it. The judges, in their order, said the pandal was put up for Navratri celebrations between October 17 and 20, 2020, and organised by Prakash Darekar, also president of Mumbai Housing Federation, under “guidance” from Pravin Darekar.

MUMBAI: The Centre told the Bombay high court on Friday the Rs 50 lakh insurance for coronavirus warriors under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna is applicable only to private doctors who were requisitioned for Covid-19 duties and died while performing them.
It was responding to a petition by Koparkhairane resident Kiran Surgade. On March 31, her husband, Dr Bhaskar Surgade, had received a notice from Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation to open his clinic to treat patients and was warned of prosecution if he did not. He then opened his clinic at Turbhe and even treated Covid patients. He contracted the infection and died on June 10. On September 7, New India Assurance Company rejected the wife’s claim for Rs 50 lakh compensation under the Yojna, saying he did not serve in an hospital designated to treat only Covid-19 patients and was a private doctor.

The HC said such tenants and their advocates make continuous attempts to stall demolition of dilapidated buildings and it is because of these tactics, there are so many instances of building collapse in the city and nearby districts.
A Bench of Justices Shahrukh Kathawalla and Riyaz Chagla lost its cool over the attempts of tenants of a building in Ghatkopar West, which has been listed as a dangerous structure since 2019.
Will PMGKP benefit private medical practitioners: Bombay HC

Mumbai: Would a private practitioner, who dies of Covid-19 in the line of his duty, be given the benefit of Rs 50 lakh insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) announced by the Union government for medical workers? questioned the Bombay High Court recently.
A bench of Justices Shahrukh Kathawalla and Riyaz Chagla has ordered the Union health ministry to clarify its stand on this issue within two weeks.
This significant issue came to light after widow of a Navi Mumbai based doctor approached the bench seeking insurance benefits under the PMGKP scheme.
