With the hottest temperatures of the year on the horizon, cooling centers across Kern County are opening to community members needing to stay cool this summer.
Shafter Recreation and Parks District staff and Shafter Kids will be taking over parks across the city for Summer fun for several weeks starting June 10.
On Friday, members of the Shafter Senior Center and the Cesar Chavez National Monument gathered to commemorate Chavez, and celebrate National Parks Week.
The Shafter Recreation and Parks District will add a solar array and upgrade the parking lot at the Walker Senior Center after receiving a $230,200 federal grant.
For several years, the Shafter Aquatic Center has been dormant and left to wither in the elements. The pools are littered with trash, pool equipment and filled with stagnant water.
