Cannes: How Streaming Is Helping, Not Killing, the Indie Film Business

Cannes: How Streaming Is Helping, Not Killing, the Indie Film Business Scott Roxborough Annette Acclaimed Polish director and European Film Academy president Agnieszka Holland gave voice to a growing fear in the independent film world: that global streamers might kill theatrical cinema. Speaking via video link at a Cannes Film Market panel on Thursday, Holland called the streaming platforms “a non-curated, big black hole where our more fragile and personal products can disappear and vanish.” Instead of having movies “curated only by algorithms,” Holland said independent filmmakers “need the real curators, the festivals, academies, critics. We need producers who will fight for a voice that is unique, rare, ambitious and challenging.”

Marcel Stellman obituary

Last modified on Mon 10 May 2021 16.18 EDT “I’d like to be remembered as the Dreaded Marcel Stellman,” Marcel Stellman once told me. “That’s what Spike Milligan called me. I produced I’m Walking Backwards for Christmas with the Goons in 1956 and I thought it would be a Christmas release. Spike insisted that it came out in the summer. It was a Top 10 hit and we followed it with The Ying Tong Song.” Stellman, who has died aged 96, had a long career in the music industry, both as a record executive and producer with Decca, and as a song lyricist whose hits included Tulips from Amsterdam. He was also, unexpectedly, the man who brought the popular television show Countdown to the UK.

i mean joe manchin he s not one of us. it s just it s ludicrous. this guy is an a-plus rating with the nra. a solid citizen on the issue if you will. and to go after him in this fashion, to me, it s just like what s the point? it s not going to change the argument in a state like west virginia for joe manchin. everyone in the state know wheres the man is and they appreciate the leadership role he s taken. it s it s sort of a tone deafness here from the nra and, of course the racial overtones come into play as well. right. so, you know, it s just a little bit nuts. i don t get another mistake. the new cover of time magazine is the informers. thank you so much. thank you. it looks like a great issue. we sit down next with actress andrea riseborough whose role in the film shadow dance raises serious questions about family, loyalty and betrayal in the ira. you re watching morning joe brewed by starbucks.
