Cannes: How Streaming Is Helping, Not Killing, the Indie Film Business Scott Roxborough Annette
Acclaimed Polish director and European Film Academy president Agnieszka Holland gave voice to a growing fear in the independent film world: that global streamers might kill theatrical cinema.
Speaking via video link at a Cannes Film Market panel on Thursday, Holland called the streaming platforms “a non-curated, big black hole where our more fragile and personal products can disappear and vanish.” Instead of having movies “curated only by algorithms,” Holland said independent filmmakers “need the real curators, the festivals, academies, critics. We need producers who will fight for a voice that is unique, rare, ambitious and challenging.”

“I’d like to be remembered as the Dreaded Marcel Stellman,” Marcel Stellman once told me. “That’s what Spike Milligan called me. I produced I’m Walking Backwards for Christmas with the Goons in 1956 and I thought it would be a Christmas release. Spike insisted that it came out in the summer. It was a Top 10 hit and we followed it with The Ying Tong Song.”
Stellman, who has died aged 96, had a long career in the music industry, both as a record executive and producer with Decca, and as a song lyricist whose hits included Tulips from Amsterdam. He was also, unexpectedly, the man who brought the popular television show Countdown to the UK.

Poway OnStage is celebrating jazz with the docuseries “Get Hip! Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know about Jazz Music,” available for streaming now through May 30.
The two-part documentary series, co-presented by Jazzreach, focuses on jazz music and the people who make it, according to Poway OnStage’s website.
Episode one is “How Jazz Works: What Happens When a Jazz Band Plays” and features top jazz artists breaking down and clarifying what is happening when a jazz band plays. It also explores the functions and roles each band member fulfills and how the group works together to make a cohesive, creative and collectively felt musical statement, the website states.
