The Seymour Marine Discovery Center recently completed a redesigned exhibit space with a focus on interactive experiences that feature stories of local climate resilience.
"I attended the celebration earlier this month at the Seymour Center for the upcoming dismantling of the 85-foot blue whale skeleton there, expecting to see the support structure under it crumbling into rusty powder and clearly looking like a safety threat, as has been widely stated," writes Jim Christmann. "I wondered if materials had been poorly chosen for that salty environment."
A crowd gathered at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center as Patti Maxine, a Santa Cruz-based musician, strummed her guitar and sang a tribute to Ms. Blue, the blue whale skeleton that has stood guard outside of the Seymour Center since 2000. The whale bones will be lowered to the ground for safe public viewing this month as the metal structures supporting Ms. Blue have deteriorated to an unsafe condition. The Seymour Center welcomed the public to celebrate the whale skeleton Sunday.
