Hornell officers recommended for commendation Officers helped defuse a situation with a loaded handgun in the city The Evening Tribune HORNELL A trio of Hornell police officers and a Steuben County Sheriff’s Deputy have been recommended for commendation letters after defusing a tense situation in the City of Hornell.  At 3:45 p.m. Dec. 27, officers were dispatched to a report of a suicidal subject armed with a handgun on Taylor Street. Officer Ian Hamilton was first on scene, with Officer Seth Blanchard and Deputy Mike Ramirez arriving shortly thereafter. Hamilton engaged in a 10-minute dialogue with the suspect, who was eventually convinced to put the loaded weapon down. Blanchard and Ramirez transported the subject to St. James Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Hornell PD highlights mental health services after talking man out of suicide

Extraordinary times of extraordinary stress, says Chief Murray The Evening Tribune HORNELL After averting a tragedy Sunday, the Hornell Police Department is sharing ways for community members who may be considering self-harm to reach out for help. According to police, Hornell officers responded at approximately 5:45 p.m., Sunday to a Taylor Street residence for a report of a despondent person with a gun to his head. “Officers were able to establish a dialogue with this man who eventually decided to put the gun down,” Hornell police said in a press release. “Officers transported the man to St. James Hospital for a mental health evaluation. The situation lasted approximately 15 minutes and nobody was injured.”
