under the train every time. and the bottom line is what happened with this fellow. we do know what happened to engineers involved in previous speed related accidents. in december of 2013 a new york city commuter train jumped the track in the bronx after it took on a curve traveling three times the posted speed, killing four people and injuring more than 603 ntsb investigators discovered the engineer nodded off at the control because of an undiagnosed sleep disorder combined with a drastic shift in niz work schedule. then there was the deadly crash in september of 2008 in an l.a. suburb a commuter train collide with a freight train. 25 people were killed including the train s engineer. it was discovered he was sending texas messages 22 seconds before the fatal impact. and then in july of 2013 a similar but even deadlier
helped drive the unemployment rate down to 6.1% and that is the lowest since september of 2008 and the fifth straight month of job gains above 200,000. and the markets are reacting to that job number. the dow in record territory now above 17,000. crossed that after the opening. it is up 67 points right now. where it closes is what matters and we will keep an eye on it. oscar pistorius is a paradox according to his doctor. the defense witness claimed the blade runners athletic abilities were in stark contrast to his daily limitations. he is accused of killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. he claims he shot her by
veterans are coming back with a different brand of injuries. have a great day, everybody. lot of news to cover. let s get you over to the newsroom with ana cabrera in for carol costello. hello, ladies. the ladies show today i like it. have a great day. newsroom starts now. captions by vitac www.vitac.com good morning, thanks for joining us. i m ana cabrera. glad to have you with us. let s start with news just in on the strength of the economy, and moments ago we learned 288,000 jobs were added last month. now that pushes the unemployment rate down two notches to 6.1%. this is now the lowest unemployment rate we ve seen since september of 2008. joining us to discuss, cnn chief business correspondent christine romans and alison kosik at the new york stock exchange. christine, we start with you. break down these numbers for us. how significant is this? it s pretty significant.
the jobs report out today says the economy added 288,000 jobs in the month of june, good number. today, in fact, marks 52 straight months of private sector job growth. it s the longest job growth streak on record. oh, and there s more good news, 9.7 million jobs have been added since 2010 and 1.4 million of those jobs were added in the first half of this year and it s the most since the first half of any year since 1999. it s all positive. the unemployment rate now has dropped to 6.1%. it s the lowest rate since september of 2008. more positive news? oh, yeah. not bad for the obama economy. earlier today president obama said the economy is doing good, but it could be better if republicans would reach across the aisle and just do their jobs. we just got the jobs report
the numbers are 6.1% is the unemployment rate. that is almost six-year low since september of 2008. as far as jobs added, nonfarm payroll jobs added, 288,000 versus estimates of 250. a lot of people were surprised by this number. you have many months where you re above the 200 mark and that s good news. then you have the weekly jobless claims. get your pen and paper out. too many numbers. 315,000 weekly claims. that number you want it to be really low. you don t want people going into the offices and filing claims as they need unemployment and that they re out of a job. that came in at 315 versus estimates of 313. the big picture here is that the labor department and the jobs that we ve been seeing have been going in the right direction. so people aren t necessarily getting the jobs they want. not getting paid what they want. services continues to go up. we re seeing rising gas price. gas also hitting a pretty darn high for the first time in a
