welcome back, everybody here to ground zero, and alex, i want to talk to you about your own reflections. on september 11th, 20 years ago you were working for msnbc, and you ran here to the site to report on it in the days after. yeah, it was a harrowing experience just even getting down here in the dead of night. but you re absolutely right, i reported all night long. and for some days afterwards, just steps from ground zero. the entire area was pitch dark with no power at all, only the lights shining on the pile, helping the firefighters search through the crumbled ruins of the twin towers. i spoke with many firefighters off camera, they were in shock. they will never forget with they witnessed. neither will i. here s some of my reporting from that night. 2:00 a.m., september 12th. we re standing about four blocks north of ground zero here along the west side highway and along the highway on both sides, as far as the eye can see, are fire trucks, rescue operations,

in the past 20 years to be honest. i mean he really laid out what it felt like on september 11th 20 years ago right now. you know, i distinctly remember walking up on september 12th, 2001, and feeling that the world had changed and watching how all americans came together to a degree. i was in the army at the time, and that sense of let s do this, you know, let s work together, let s help everyone out, we had shared consequence in this country around, you know, september 11th. then you fast forward to today where we just saw something on january 6th that while not as deadly or as shocking as 9/11 was still quite traumatic i think for our country. you see such divisive discussion and vitriolic hate being spewed by so many americans against each other, it is hard to reconcile why we would behave this way as a country, why we wouldn t see something like 9/11
