federal investigation into hunter biden is over. can you explain this? this has been a lingering question. there s david rice, the attorney overseeing this investigation, has been in correspondents with capitol hill. he s made a point of saying this is an ongoing investigation. suggesting when he comes to the hill to testify, he s offered to come in september or october, that there maybe things he can t talk about because of an ongoing investigation. a lot of us looked at that and sort of read it as, of course, the justice department is going to refer to this as an on going investigation when hunter hasn t formally entered his plea, when the judge hasn t signed off on it, when we haven t gone through the sentencing process. but there was a lingering question is there a part of this investigation beginning on here? this is what they are affirming in court is that this investigation is ongoing. this appears to be a source of the tension that led to this plea deal to crumble.
protest all of that. where it crosses the line is, of course, what these men are accused of doing, which is to try to essentially use that moment on january 6th to try to block the transfer of power. to remind people who are just joining us now what is happening, as we re following this breaking news, the leader of the oath keepers, sentenced to 18 years for his actions around january 6th. a judge in the sentencing process, he s been convicted of seditious conspiracy, but a judge sentencing him decided that his actions amounted to domestic terrorism, that stewart rh rhodes actions on and around january 6th amounted to domestic terrorism, and this is significant because this is the longest sentence handed out as it pertains to the actions of anyone on january 6th. but let s remind people, i think people have become familiar with stewart rhodes, the name, the oath keepers, they remember the column of people walking up the steps to the capitol. but just take us back, evan,
part of the court documents say that mr. bowers said things like he wants to kill jews while he was going on this shooting rampage. prosecutors found anti-semitic postings on line that habash distributed to mr. bowers, as well. that brings us to today. mr. bowers, of course, is accused of killing 11, injuring many others. he s facing 63 felony counts including 22 potentially death penalty-related counts, and prosecutors in this case are seeking the death penalty. in fact, early today the judge said to some of the potential jurors, you should be prepared to rule on a on whether or not to give this man the death penalty if we get to that sentencing process, if he is determined guilty, as well. but i ll say that mr. bowers, his defense attorney, one of his defense attorneys, is a high-profile attorney who has defended other federal death penalty defendants in the past. her name is judy clark. she s defended folks like the unabomber and tsarnaev from the
