The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has granted convicted killer James Ricardo Alexander Fields special leave to appeal his conviction and is expected to clarify “a serious point of law” for the local courts when they eventually hear his matter.Through his attorneys Andrew Pilgrim KC and Martie Garnes, Fields is urging the CCJ to overturn the Barbados Court of Appeal’s ruling that his conviction was safe.Last October, the Court of Appeal lowered the sentence of the convicted manslayer but dismissed the appeal against his conviction. From that decision, Fields, formerly of Bank Hall Main Road, St Michael, was ordered to serve 11 years for the February 18, 2010 shooting death of Michael Dear.That sentence began on July 3, 2020, five months after he was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter by a jury in the High Court.He was initially sentenced to 22 years, minus the six years spent on remand among several factors, leaving him with 16 years to serve at Dodds. Kevin DonPedro Chandler has been ordered to pay $25 000 in fines for having an illegal gun and ammunition.The Hillaby, St Andrew resident had to pay the No. 3 Supreme Court $15 000 forthwith for having the unlicensed firearm while he has three months to pay the remaining $10 000, for having the ammunition, if he wants to avoid spending the remaining three years of an eight-year starting sentence behind bars.Chandler had pleaded guilty to having a 9mm semi-automatic and 12 rounds of ammunition on September 9, 2016.In relaying the facts, Senior State Counsel Neville Watson told the No. 3 Supreme Court that police were on duty along a road in St Thomas conducting traffic stops when they observed Chandler driving a vehicle. With siren on, they followed him into Proute Tenantry where he came to a stop at a cul-de-sac and got out, leaving the driver’s door open.

Jury sees footage in which accused admits to shooting former security guard

Video footage was introduced today as the murder trial of Rommel Akeem Cummins continued in the No. 3 Supreme Court.Lead investigator Sergeant Michael Ifill returned to the witness stand and told the court he had shown the footage to Cummins while he was in police custody.Cummins, 30, of Vauxhall No. 2 Christ Church, is accused of murdering Dave Archer on June 10, 2019 while aboard the MV DreamChaser, where Archer worked as a security guard.The 12-member jury was shown video footage of Cummins being interviewed by Ifill and police constable Mervyn Sealy, as well as footage of the car park closest to the MV DreamChaser.
