Rommel Akeem Cummins told a High Court on Wednesday that he only confessed to murdering Dave Archer after being beaten and tortured by police officers.In an unsworn statement which he gave from the dock of the No. 3 Supreme Court, he said he admitted to killing Archer to avoid being beaten again.Cummins, 30, of Vauxhall No. 2, Christ Church, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Archer on June 10, 2019. Archer, a former security guard on the MV DreamChaser, was gunned down while on the party vessel.Cummins alleged that lead investigator Sergeant Michael Ifill and five other police officers who he did not know by name took him into a room and tortured him to give the confession, which he eventually did on June 13, 2019.
Video footage was introduced today as the murder trial of Rommel Akeem Cummins continued in the No. 3 Supreme Court.Lead investigator Sergeant Michael Ifill returned to the witness stand and told the court he had shown the footage to Cummins while he was in police custody.Cummins, 30, of Vauxhall No. 2 Christ Church, is accused of murdering Dave Archer on June 10, 2019 while aboard the MV DreamChaser, where Archer worked as a security guard.The 12-member jury was shown video footage of Cummins being interviewed by Ifill and police constable Mervyn Sealy, as well as footage of the car park closest to the MV DreamChaser.
Dave Archer died as a result of a gunshot injury to the abdomen.That was the cause of death given by consultant pathologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Dr David Gaskin, whose post-mortem report was entered into evidence on Friday in the No. 3 Supreme Court as the murder trial of Rommel Akeem Cummins continued.Cummins, 30, of Vauxhall No. 2 Christ Church, is accused of murdering Archer on June 10, 2019. The full document will be made available to the jury.In reading a snippet of the report to the jury, Justice Carlisle Greaves said Dr Gaskin concluded that Archer died as a result of the gunshot injury and his death was deemed unnatural.
