complaint. this is also a reporter with the wall street journal. welcome to all of you. sadie, you and your colleagues at the journal, you have done some wonderful reporting and all of this. let s take a look at just a few of your latest coauthored pieces. there are the headlines. there is this exclusive publish from this morning. it is looking at fbi director christopher wray s efforts to keep politics out of the bureau. i know that you contributed to this articles. it says that he did not address the mar-a-lago search in the interview. quote, people familiar with the matter say that he was involved in weeks of discussion with the attorney general, merrick garland and other senior doj and fbi officials about the decision to ask you execute the search warrant. we believe that it was a step that had to be taken to recover classified documents. did you learn, sadie, anything about the characterizations of those discussions? what we know about the fbi director and the attorney general
considered this decision and took as many as a couple weeks to have high-level meetings with senior doj officials and fbi director christopher wray. some people portrayed this as dawdling or indecisive. most people i talked to about this, though, say this was an incredibly momentous decision, and it is normal garland considered this for a long time. as i said before, this is not just about the urgency of getting back classified documents. it s about more than that, clearly. they ve said as much in their affidavit now. there is an ongoing criminal investigation. what we re looking at here, again, is donald trump didn t pack these boxes himself. he didn t bring the documents from mar-a-lago by himself. so there may well be other people who have criminal exposure, and that will take some time to unfold. you know, we may see the justice department doing the classic thing they do, which is going after the lower level people and trying to flip them against higher level people. one thing, jon
you understand these things. during the second impeachment of trump, there were details given with respect to what donald trump did and what people knew and how he encouraged this thing. now the criminal referral has been sent to the department of justice, you have merrick garland, the attorney general, who has emphasized this is the department of justice. this is looked at as the department of justice should and not be political about it. that is how it should go, but feels frustraing and feels it will take longer. how should we think about this? we come out of four years where the department of justice was a play thing for the former president. you are absolutely right. it is a great relief the department of justice is independent and looking out for the rule of law for all americans, not a law firm for a cult-like surrounding president who failed.
