$22m scam suspect surrenders

Fraud suspect Moses January Banda who is accused of theft of $22 million from TM Pick n Pay’s Steward Bank account surrendered himself to police over the weekend and yesterday appeared in court, distancing himself from the offence saying his hands were clean.

January (44) told the Harare court yesterday when he appeared for initial remand and his bail application that he does not know any of the other suspects who implicated him of playing a major role in the fraud.

JUST IN: Man arrested for supplying gun used in US$2,7m heist

A man whose rifle was used in the US$2,7 million cash heist that occurred along the Harare-Chinhoyi Road, yesterday appeared in court on allegations of supplying the firearm to the gang that pretended it was involved in poaching and promised to return the gun with some meat.
Tawanda Chikeya of Granary Phase 3, Harare, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court charged with lending, offering or hiring a firearm to “any person other than a firearm dealer”.
Police investigations have established that the round of ammunition fired on January 6 when the US$2,7 million cash heist happened belonged to Chikeya’s rifle.

The robbery of US$2,775 million and $43 000 from a cash-in-transit ZB Bank vehicle along Harare-Chinhoyi Road on Wednesday is believed to be an inside job where three security personnel in the vehicle allegedly connived with robbers.
As a result, the three security staff who have since been arrested are expected to appear in court today charged with theft after a warrant allowing for longer police detention was granted yesterday.
Nomatter Jonga (43), Mathew Simango (66) and Fanuel Musakwa (34) appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts yesterday where the State applied for their warrant for further detention in police custody.
