When an individual or a family makes the difficult decision to choose a placement in a nursing home or long-term care facility, they do so with the expectation that they will be receiving quality, nurturing care. Sadly, for years we have heard from our constituents and frontline caregivers that nursing home residents are not always receiving sufficient quality of care, a problem that has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Residents need greater certainty of quality care, including the implementation of guaranteed staffing minimums and standards. That is why we sponsored legislation to make our nursing homes safer. The legislation sets a state standard, with minimum hours of care to residents. We want to give patients and their families the peace of mind that comes from knowing these standards and protections are in place on the state level to ensure staffing levels that adequately meet the needs of

Nursing home minimum staffing bill to go to vote in RI House

PROVIDENCE  A proposed compromise in the politically charged, union-driven fight for minimum staffing mandates at Rhode Island nursing homes is headed to the Rhode Island House for a vote, after winning the endorsement of a key committee on Thursday. The mandate would be phased in over two years. The minimum number of required hours per patient per day would be lower than in the Senate-passed version, and would include time spent with physical therapists, speech pathologists and other medical professionals.   In an interview earlier this week, Shekarchi said the reworked bill balances the desire to improve health-care quality and patient care . Noret, D-Coventry, West Warwick Rhode Island business owners could be prosecuted for making their employees get COVID shots or refusing a hotel room to someone who isn t vaccinated under legislation now before state lawmakers.    A bill introduced by Coventry Democrat Thomas Noret would make vaccination status a protected class under the state law that currently defends people from discrimination based on their race, gender or sexual orientation. It would also block the governor from making vaccination mandatory in a state of emergency and prohibits financial institutions from refusing loans based on vaccination status.
