American Legion Post 4 in Norwich selling building to start over

NORWICH During its final day serving as the home of American Legion Post 4, piles of trophies sat in the entranceway. A man bought a pool table. Movers packed a truck with items taken from the hall.  The building on 457 Laurel Hill Road in Norwich served as the long-time home of the 100-year-old American Legion Robert O. Fletcher Post 4. But through the years, it became painfully clear it was time Post 4 found another home.   “The building isn’t what makes the American Legion post,” Post Commander James Robertson said. “It’s the membership that makes it.” Debts pile up Debts have piled up at Post 4, and toward the end of 2020 officials decided to sell their building to Wiese Construction in Norwich. The sale will be finalized on April 28. While Robertson doesn’t know yet what the building or site will be used for, he said the decision to sell was important to keep the post in good financial standing.

Kevin Sathany: Racism against Asian Americans can end with education

NORWICH Kevin Saythany knows racism against Asian Americans is hardly new. As a recent rise in violent crimes against them has ignited fear and drawn national attention, Saythany, a member of the city’s Board of Education, has a message: “As a collective group in America, we can defeat racism, discrimination, and hatred,” he said. “It may not be 100%, but we can significantly reduce the numbers through education, political legislation, and common sense moral behaviors that are positive in nature (i.e. to show respect to others that do not share the same skin color as you or ideas). “Humans are not born to express the negative traits listed above. They are only taught or shown. We are in the second decade of the 21st century now, and our country should not be progressing in these primitive behaviors or attitudes.”

Bipartisan Group Calls For Scrutiny Into Connecticut Port Authority

Courtesy of Connecticut Port Authority The Connecticut Port Authority is under scrutiny again, this time from both political parties about spending at the quasi-public agency. Democratic Senator Cathy Osten has proposed legislation that would disband the Port Authority and transfer their responsibilities back to the state transportation department Osten said it’s time. “We’ve been dealing with it for three years. ‘cause the project is an important project, we need to make sure that someone who handles hundred-million-dollar contracts or more, which the Department of Transportation handles on a regular basis when they’re building large bridges and other large pieces of infrastructure. It’s clear that we need someone that can handle that.”
