military analyst. rick tyler a republican strategist. and evan bayh, a former democratic senator and governor from indiana. he s also co-chair of the bipartisan group no labels. it s good to see all of you. general, so many questions. we did learn some things from general dunnford yesterday. but based on what you heard and what you know, does it sound, this whole incident, sound like something u.s. forces could have or should have been able to sniff out in advance? well, you know, i ve been in a lot of small unit combat actions. they re inherently confusing. these special 70 forces are all over the world. they re on classified missions. they re at the end of the line. it s inherently dangerous. so i think we re going to find out more when they actually put together a time sequence. but this very brutal closed quarter engagement, and i think they did an admirable job. they were right on the verge obviously of being overrun.
rick tyler and evan bayh. i know you re looking out of either side of your head, trying to see if you can grab somebody to talk to. let me ask you about this meeting, behind closed doors obviously, but should we be looking for anything surrounding this meeting that might give us a clue as to where this investigation is going? before it starts, i think we re getting a little bit of a clue just by the scheduling around this meeting today. we re seeing the pace pick up a little bit here. for both of these committees. on the house side today, there s actually another witness coming in this afternoon. that s the first time i can remember them having two folks here in the same day for interviews. and we re also seeing the probe get a little bit closer to people who are personally closer to trump. michael cohen has been trump s perm lawyer for a very long time. when i used to deal with him back in 2011 and 2012, he was sort of the only politically minded person around the president. or then
presidential campaign was going on. it seemed like a haphazard, not very well connected, tom hamburger had reported from the washington post that he sort of wrote this e-mail address that was sort of like, you know, info @kremlin.org. it s curious because all of trump s competitors had hotels in russia. is that protected under attorney/client privilege? i m not sure. does the ploliticalization o this, senator, make it harder to get to truth or make it harder to come to a conclusion that s accepted? of course any time something s criticized, chris, that makes it harder. the parties tend to get divided, entrenched. at least on the senate side, chairman burr and senate warner have a good working relationship. at least speaking for the senate, i don t think partisan will get in the way and it certainly won t influence what mr. mueller is doing. evan bayh, thanks to you.
sample more opinion. we talked about money tonight. that 501c4 should be disclosed and total disclosure. gerrymandering is an issue. closed primaries? what is evan bayh thinking of what would move the ball forward? i agree with all of things you just mentioned, michael, but at the end of the day, those sort of structural reforms will help but at the end of the day, the american people need to take the political process back and vote for, as the other guest just mentioned, practical problem solvers. some progress is better than none. we ve got a group called no labels trying to resolve that and that needs to gain some traction. because at the end of the day, as martin luther king said, we may have arrived in different ships but we re all in the same boat now. we are just electing people that don t behave that way. don t run for people who run
