cal thomas and former indiana seven evan bayh are here. thank you for joining us. cal, we know the former governor is looking to take a more progressive stance than hillary. do you think that s what the country wants? no i don t think that s what the country wants but i think it s what the democratic party wants. he s a pretty consistent liberal. he was for same-sex marriage at the beginning. he is for higher taxes and more spending. he was against the iraq war. hillary clinton was for the iraq war and voted for it when she was a senator before she was against it. she was against same-sex marriage but now says she is for it. so i think martin o malley has a far more consistent record that is appealing to progressives on the democratic left. you asked is the country ready for it? martin o maly has a record as mayor of baltimore. he was applauded for trying to get people to come back in.
boy, they have their stuff together? i think particularly if one of them was going to run against her, jim webb may be different but the other two would run against her from the left and the fact she focused on middle class economic issues, trying to deal with the stagnant wages from middle class families, that resonated pretty well with the folks they may be trying to appeal to so that may have narrowed the space within the democratic party but in all honesty, she was looking strong already. it comes down to big union bosses and big environmental and feminist groups and what is elizabeth warren going to do? she said repeatedly she s not running. who is she going to endorse? where are these endorsers going to go? and so far, to your point, they have held off. we ll see if another candidate gets in. so far, she s the only candidate on the democratic side. senator bayh, thank you for
unfortunately the way he s doing that makes both situations troublesome. secondly he continues to believe his words matter, answers his words matter less and less, because our allies and friends have figured out words do not signal intention. that create a situation in which our allies cannot believe they can count on us and our enemies believe they can ignore us. senator bayh, is that from policy to optics what could the president be doing better? the truth is most of this instability is caused by trends that predated this president and will probably haunt the next president as well. the truth also is our ability to materially affect these things, what s going on inside iraq, syr syria, ukraine, is somewhat at the margins. while the american penal want us to be strong, they don t favor
this week? i think that s the key. you have a situation from the nsa becoming somewhat creepy in what they re actually doing. you have to find that balance. that s the key. i know when evan and i voted on these issues, we tried to find a balance. we do have people throughout the world that want to kill us and change our way of life. to make sure that our law enforcement people have the tools and resources to do their jobs to keep us safe, we have to make sure thuf the law toss do that and information to do it. it is a balance. the question is how will the president do it? senator bayh, he had a couple advisory councils, i think around 46 recommendations. the president has a lot to digest and a lot to work with. he s taking heat from the left and the right on this. how in the world does he mollify everyone? he will not mollify everyone,
