Week two at the West Virginia Legislature | News, Sports, Jobs

sadams@newsandsentinel.com As the headline states, it is week two here under the gold dome, but it feels like it’s the final two weeks based on how long floor sessions are going, as well as the tone. Already this week the House of Delegates passed two education reform bills, legislation dealing with states of emergency and federal disaster funding appropriation authority, and occupational licensing reform – all pretty big reforms. Most of my time has been spent on the House side. Not to say that the state Senate isn’t doing important things, but it appears the House is doing the heavy lifting, especially on education reform. Advocates Say Digital Connections Are Meaningful, Accessible

: Advocates on a Zoom lobby call with Del. Glenn Davis (R-Virginia Beach).  Lobby days are an important tradition in Virginia politics, when advocacy groups bring their members together at the state capitol to hold demonstrations and speak with lawmakers face-to-face. COVID-19 has changed all of that. The Virginia Citizens Defense League, a group which holds its well-known lobby day on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday,  organized a car rally this year instead of a more traditional one which would likely not meet Gov. Ralph Northam’s social distancing standards. Many other advocacies are choosing to take their work entirely online.
