Photo courtesy of Sarah Doremus by Leslie Landrigan Sarah Doremus had no interest in teaching when a friend approached her about a job opening at the Sedgwick Elementary School eight years ago. “My initial thought was, ‘I’d rather gnaw my arm off,’” said Doremus, a sculptor and jewelry designer who lives in Deer Isle. But the prospect of health insurance and summers off made her reconsider, she said in a phone interview. Then she decided teaching elementary school-aged children could be a fun new challenge and it was.

Sedgwick teacher honored SEDGWICK Sedgwick Elementary School art teacher Sarah Doremus was named Hancock County’s Teacher of the Year last week. “I’m honored and a little humbled,” said Doremus. “I’m also very flattered.” The nine-year public school veteran worked as an artist before a School Board member approached her about teaching art at the school. Doremus said her initial thought about teaching was she’d rather gnaw her arm off than work with children. But she kept an open mind. “Nine years later, I can’t think of anything else I’d rather be doing,” said Doremus, who was perpetually surrounded by inquisitive pre-kindergarten students Tuesday morning.

Sedgwick Elementary art instructor named Hancock County Teacher of the Year SEDGWICK Sedgwick Elementary School art teacher Sarah Doremus has been named Hancock County’s Teacher of the Year. The Maine Department of Education honored teachers from all 16 Maine counties on Wednesday during a broadcast on the department’s YouTube channel. As part of the Maine Teacher of the Year Program, hundreds of teachers across Maine are nominated by a member of their school community. Through a rigorous application process, one teacher from each county is selected as the county Teacher of the Year by a panel of teachers, principals and business community members within the county.

Get bags at the Deer Isle town office, Stonington town office and the Island Heritage Trust. “We are encouraging people to adopt a section of the road that we can put on a map to streamline the cleanup,” said Jim Fisher, Deer Isle town manager.
