Sarah Doremus had no interest in teaching when a friend approached her about a job opening at the Sedgwick Elementary School eight years ago.
“My initial thought was, ‘I’d rather gnaw my arm off,’” said Doremus, a sculptor and jewelry designer who lives in Deer Isle.
But the prospect of health insurance and summers off made her reconsider, she said in a phone interview. Then she decided teaching elementary school-aged children could be a fun new challenge—and it was.
