AISD's new elementary to be named after McKinney

AISD moves to strongly recommend, but not require face coverings

3 hrs ago Aledo ISD will now strongly recommend — but not require — face coverings after a 6-1 vote at Thursday’s special board of trustees meeting. “I think when the governor made his announcement to lift masks, this board and district operated in the same manner that we were not just going to jump because somebody said jump — we understood over the last year things had changed over and over and over,” AISD Board Secretary Forrest Collins said. After monitoring other districts and their own numbers as well as getting teachers vaccinated, board members said they felt it was time to lift the mask requirement for AISD.

Aledo moms speak out on racial bullying

5 hrs ago Two Aledo ISD mothers who said their sons were the target of racial bullying addressed the school board publicly Thursday night, expressing concern over their children s well-being and protection. “We — our families and our sons who are being put through this because of the stance that you all failed to take — feel that you all failed them,” one mother said during the special called meeting. The mothers said they were notified about the incident on March 25 when screenshots of a Snapchat group surfaced. “It was a post from a Snapchat entitled ‘(N-word) Auction,’” one of the mothers said. “As I looked down on the screen at the various name changes of the group, it included ’Slave Trade,’ it included ’(N-word) Farm’ and then I saw my son’s name.”

AISD board names 2019 bond campus projects

The Aledo ISD board of trustees officially named its 2019 bond projects this week. Voters approved the $149.95 million bond on Nov. 5, 2019, which includes a new elementary school, a new middle school, Aledo Middle School renovation and expansion, the conversion of McAnally Intermediate School into an elementary school and the renovation of Vandagriff Elementary School into an early childhood campus. The new elementary school No. 6, which will be on Farm-to-Market Road 5 across from the Annetta Cemetery, is now Annetta Elementary School. Annetta Elementary School will serve kindergarten through fifth grade. “I think it pays homage to the heritage of our school district,” AISD Board Secretary Forrest Collins said. “Once upon a time there was a school named Annetta School and it serviced the Annettas. It was adjacent to Annetta Methodist Church and that school I believe had two classrooms, an auditorium and a fireplace, that’s how old it was. So to honor our past
