Proposed state budget cuts in California could significantly impact hundreds of local organizations, affecting the services they provide to the community.
Because of assistance from Second Harvest case specialist Marisol Cisneros-Lopez, 36-year-old Santa Cruz County resident Yesenia Hernandez receives monthly CalFresh benefits, which increase the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables she can buy for her family.
"You have a baby here or you come to our baby class or you're going to have a baby, Nourish is for you," said Executive Director of the Watsonville Community Hospital Foundation June Ponce. "Come, let's make sure that from 0-5 (years old) your baby is well taken care of."
From the start, 2023 was definitely a wetter year than usual in Santa Cruz County. On New Year's Day, Watsonville was inundated with flooding near Corralitos Creek, and atmospheric rivers throughout the region hit Santa Cruz and Capitola hard, prompting a visit by President Joe Biden.
