WESTPORT For the second time in recent months, selectmen made a change to the town beach decal policy.
Selectmen Chairman Richard Brewer initiated discussion of a change that will allow one person to obtain two beach pass decals for different vehicles.
The change was not welcomed by all: Beach Committee member Sean Leach expressed concern that it will lead to parking issues while Stella Farias, the principal clerk at the Town Clerk’s office, said the new change will lead to more paperwork for a busy office. Farias and Leach also warned that there would be confusion by changing the police midstream or twice before beach season begins.
WESTPORT When Selectman Brian Valcourt was a teen, he worked on an ice cream truck and truck employees would be “shooed away” by town police if they parked at the town-owned East Beach.
Valcourt said not much has changed in the decades that have followed but resident Patricia Garcia is trying to reverse that trend.
Garcia and her husband, Michael, are seeking permission to park a food truck and generate business on a town-owned parcel of East Beach. That beach, a rocky one used mostly as a scenic overlook, abuts the trailer lots of seasonal residents.
This latter issue is one reason why Garcia’s proposal has been met with some resistance.

WESTPORT Many people are looking forward to 2021, and Westport residents have something new to look forward to multiple beach decals per household.
Selectmen at the Dec. 21 meeting voted to allow as many licensed drivers per household obtain separate beach passes. Seasonal residents will be limited to two beach passes per household.
Selectman Brian Valcourt has said on a few occasions including at the Dec. 21 meeting that the former beach decal policy “punishes poor people.” Valcourt has also said that during this pandemic, some financially strapped families should not be limited in their ability to obtain a beach pass.
According to beach-goer David Cass, no taxpayer should have limited access.
