A woman in her 40s with no known health conditions is the first Washoe County COVID-19 death from the more contagious Delta variant.
She did not receive a COVID-19 vaccine, the Washoe County Health District reported Thursday.
The county total of related deaths from the virus since March 2020 now stands at 685.
The health district has not immediately said if her death is related to one of the four Delta clusters, including one linked to a Washoe County kindergarten class.
But they are worried. It’s very concerning that a person with no underlying health conditions died because of COVID-19, said Washoe County Health District communications manager Scott Oxarart. It shows how powerful COVID-19 and the variants of concern are.
The number of students being excluded from school for being in contact with a COVID-19 infectious person has significantly increased in the past two weeks, but neither county health offcials nor the Washoe County School District can say how many. Here in our community, we have seen in the last 14 days a rise in cases affecting students and leading to numerous exclusions, unfortunately, Superintendent Kristen McNeill said Friday on a call with reporters.
In data updated Friday and still on its website Tuesday, the district shows that students at Damonte and Galena high schools and Caughlin Ranch, Hall, Dunn and Westergard elementary schools have been excluded because of possible COVID-19 exposure. No other schools were listed as having current exclusions for possible exposure.
LAS VEGAS (AP) â Lawmakers in Las Vegas are linking plans to fully lift distancing restrictions beginning May 1 with vaccination rates in the stateâs key tourism region, while Reno-area businesses could soon have no capacity limits and voluntary distancing rules.
County lawmakers in the stateâs two most populous areas approved separate reopening plans Tuesday for consideration Thursday by the stateâs COVID-19 Response Task Force appointed by Gov. Steve Sisolak.
Caleb Cage, task force chairman, hasn t publicly commented on Washoe County s plan but he responded favorably on Wednesday to Clark County s Las Vegas plan.
âWhat I saw yesterday with the Clark County plan was a very thoughtful and comprehensive approach that reflected, from my perspective, a great collaboration between Clark County and the Southern Nevada Health District, he told reporters.
