Ryan Kershaw has been given the chance to sign for Conviction Records after picking up a guitar during a short stint in jail. IT was his dream to pursue a career in music and a jail term at Barlinnie saw him pick up a guitar for the first time in years. Now Ryan Kershaw has caught the attention of a unique record label, Conviction Records, and following the launch of a fund earlier this year he has now recorded his first couple of tracks in a studio. Around £600 was raised which was enough for the label to get Ryan into a recording studio for the first time to record his music.
Rare chairs made for the painter and decorator friend of Charles Rennie Mackintosh are to go under the hammer at auction next week. Two pairs of stained oak dining chairs, specially designed by Mackintosh for his friend William Douglas, are to be auctioned live online. The unique pieces of furniture will form part of Lyon & Turnbull’s specialist ‘Design Since 1860’ sale on Thursday April 22. The two pairs of chairs, originally part of a set of six and upholstered in horsehair fabric, were created by Mackintosh in 1910 for William Douglas, house-painter and wallpaper hanger.

THEY started out as 46 plain white vases, blank ceramics, but have now been transformed into stunning designs by some of Scotland’s most high profile contemporary artists and creatives. From David Mach, known for his large Big Heid sculptures along the M8, to Adrian Wiszniewski, Celie Byrne, daughter of artist John Byrne, and Neil McPherson, the response has been overwhelming for organiser and artist June Carey. And there will be a rare opportunity to see the vases when they are exhibited at the Glasgow Print Studio next month for Art In Mind.
Read more: While most are known for their art, Rebus creator Ian Rankin has also produced a vase which will be on display. His design involves noughts and crosses which is a homage to the first novel Rebus appeared in, Knots and Crosses, in 1987. Comedian Phill Jupitus has also got involved in the project and currently embarking on a new path studying art at Dundee University.
