A man with a larger than life with a very large persona that touched everyone he met. Hinkel died from a heart attack on sunday. He was 58. Soon after hinkel came to Madrid High School in 1987, he transformed the football program. He was also a High School History teacher and track coach. Hinkel led the tigers to five state track titles. He coached 36 seasons of football. He is one of 12 iowa football coaches to surpass 300 career wins. In life, people influence one or two people if theyre lucky. Randy come in and change the culture of this town. Randy represents madrid, he when you think of madrid, you think of randy hinkel and to get that news, first unbelievable, and then a punch in the gut. They are very grateful for that. They have 300 firefighters on the line battling the fire and they did not get a break over night. They say it took all night to tackle this but the winds have died down and it was giving them problems yesterday afternoon. That is when the fire was spreading quickly. It has burned 2,700 acres and we expect an update the number this morning. They say it has destroyed five structures. You just saw an airplane drop retardant on the flames. Some of the shots of the flame and smoke are eerie. We have asked the chopper to maneuver over the most active part of the fire.
