Is sort of marking just how large this fire is. Authorities are telling us again that there were about 200 evacuations as this fire continues to spread. We are expecting the possibility that we could see more evacuations tonight. Well keep an ear on it and keep you updated. Back to you. Thank you. We want to go to Elizabeth Cook in the newsroom. She is watching the live pictures come in from chopper 5. Liz . Reporter veronica, we have literally had a birdseye view of how crews have been attacking this fire. You just saw an airplane drop retardant on the flames. Some of the shots of the flame and smoke are eerie. We have asked the chopper to maneuver over the most active part of the fire. Now, this is at one of the ridgetops of pope valley. You can see how the flames have made a run up the steep hillsides making it very difficult for firefighters. If you look very carefully, those are those spot fires that christin was mentioning. Now, what they send up that dark ominous pillars of smoke and when you see those spot fires, the problem is they can combine and create an even bigger fire. Those are the smaller fires that firefighters are especially concerned about. Now, youre also seeing a combination of smoke from that view. You see a combination of the dark smoke and the white smoke. Dark smoke typically means a structure or other nonorganic material is burning whereas the white smoke in a fire of this magnitude can often mean its burning more brush or trees in that area. Now, heres a look at some video from chopper 5 just a short time ago. There are some planes making some air attacks on the fire. You can see right now its really the only way to reach the flames burning in the most remote areas where this fire is. We have watched choppers and several planes make countless runs trying to slow the spread of this fire. Now, were going to keep an eye on this. Again, live pictures from chopper 5. You can see two more airplanes flying over making some drops on the flames right now right there on the ridge fire. Firefighters having a big challenge because of hot, dry conditions. Theres a helicopter, one of the ways that they are dropping in that basket thats, uhm, whats called phoschek. And its that orange stuff that you see being dropped in the fire just one of the many ways that they are trying to attack these flames. We are going to stay on top of this and keep watching chopper 5 to see how this fire develops. Veronica, back to you. Thank you. We want to go ahead and bring in Brian Hackney now for the weather conditions in the area because, brian, like liz has been saying, this is a heavy brush area. Its very rural. And we just got an update that that fire has now spread to 2500 acres and i cant help but think that thats because of those hot, dry conditions. Yeah, boy, thats more than doubled in size since 5 00 tonight. We did have a big cooldown today. The temperatures at that site where youre looking now is about 75 degrees. The winds are relatively light. Thats why you can see the flames rising fairly vertically instead of being bent over by a strong wind. The winds in the area about 5 miles an hour out of the southwest. Thats a moist direction. Relative humidity is 55 . So the one tiny element of good news about this is at least the fire is not beg fanned by really strong winds. They are not in the forecast right now. Brian, thanks. A late update from cal fire. Again, this fire 2500 acres only 30 contained. Well give you more updates on the fire throughout the newscast and track the latest on the acres burned and evacuations, 200 people have been evacuated. Were not even at the 4th and fireworks a live look chopper 5, we are continuing to follow a very fastmoving fire in napa county. This is north of napa called the pope valley. Evacuations of about 200 homes are in effect. A lot of animals, its a very rural area. 2500 acres. At 5 00 it was about 500 acres and 10 contained. They have it about 30 contained but just so much smoke in the area. And going to bring in Brian Hackney now. Necessary for paul deanno. And the winds not a huge fact he is in for paul deanno. And the winds not a huge factor. I dont want to say its not bad but it could be worse. The winds now in the area about 5 miles an hour out of the southwest and the temperatures just in the mid 70s. A world away from where we were 48 hours ago. Sure. That part of it is good news and an interesting part of the bay area really on the outskirts of the bay area but you go through napa valley, you have the resorts, wine tasting and then you just go through angwin and you end up in this almost completely depopulate area of california, pope valley which incidentally is where Ronald Reagan first announced he was going to run for governor in 1966. So its got some History Associated with it too but theres not many people out there at the moment. Certainly is some property though and some brush and obviously the fire. But for the fireworks, 4th of july, fog near the coast, and temperature in the warmest spots will just be about 90 degrees. So the forecast looks pretty good except along the shoreline. This shot is a revelation. If you are sitting and watching this from the east bay, parts of the north bay, north of corte madera and down in the south bay, it has been lead end overcast in the city for much of the day today as we have a strong onshore flow at the surface and low clouds. Thats what kept you cooler in livermore. 71 degrees in the city. What we are seeing tonight, giants and cardinals game Time Temperature 58 degrees. Cloudy and breezy. Futurecast shows a lot of low clouds around 7 00 tomorrow morning. They will peel back to the shoreline later in the day. But we are going to go with stratus quo the usual low clouds along the shoreline and clearing in the afternoon. Drizzle at the shore, as well. But as we get toward the weekend, things will warm up. Low 60s with some drizzle at the shoreline. And as we get toward the weekend we warm up again. You know, reagan probably announced in 65 because the race was in 1966. We just love you, brian. Take a look over my shoulder at just how active this fire is burning. You can see the smoke rising from beyond that ridge. Evacuees are being told to go to Pope Valley School or Middletown High School for shelter. The fire is fueled by heavy drought conditions. You can see it from the chopper aerials. You can see right here the fire has spread in a very short amount of time of around 5 00 we told you a few hundred acres. And now again hearing that its now 2500 acres. Its threatening homes in the area and livestock in this very rural area. Authorities having a tough time fighting it out here. Wind isnt a factor.
