Hackers are apparently trying to extort a Saskatchewan insurance company by threatening to release its customers’ personal and financial information on the Internet, and have already done it to some clients.
John Galon Insurance Services Ltd. has launched a forensic investigation into a “security incident” in Regina, according to its parent company.

The extent of the breach and the hackers’ demands are unclear, but the cyber-saboteurs posted private insurance documents from several clients online, including their phone numbers, addresses and credit card information.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic administrators say the post-secondary institution has largely recovered from a cyberattack that crippled its systems last fall.
Online classes were cancelled for several days after the Oct. 30 incident. Vice-President of Administrative Services Cheryl Schmitz confirmed at a media update on Thursday that the issue began when someone opened an email attachment that contained malicious software.

Schmitz said outside experts were brought in to help, and have managed to get most systems fully functional. Remaining fixes include a new online registration tool for Continuing Education programs. She said registration is currently being done by phone, and is expected to be available online in the next few weeks.
