(Don Treeger / The Republican) Facebook Share As millions of individuals altered their behavior due to the pandemic, life in Zoos pretty much stayed the same. The caretaking and zookeeping continued, minus the visitors, of course. Visitors who, with the price of admission, paid the bills. Zookeepers and caretakers certainly couldn’t work from home. And it wasn’t feasible to furlough “Cassie” the coyote and “Holly,” a four-month-old llama. All were there to stick it out. During the shutdown, life went on. Along with several baby hedgehogs, two Pygmy Goats were born.

Forest Park Zoo receives $125K in pandemic assistance; COVID shutdown squeezed ticket sales Updated May 03, 2021; Facebook Share SPRINGFIELD In a brief convergence of sounds on Monday at the Forest Park Zoo, the donkeys brayed, the monkeys screamed and, just outside the main gate, politicians crowed. Against a backdrop of chattering animals, members of the Springfield legislative delegation and local officials celebrated the awarding of $125,000 in state pandemic assistance to the zoo as it rebounds from a coronavirus-related shutdown. State Sens. Eric Lesser and Adam Gomez and state Reps. Bud Williams and Carlos Gonzales joined zoo officials for a press briefing to announce funding contained in the state budget for fiscal 2021 that was approved in December. City Councilor Malo Brown was also present.

Forest Park Zoo Reopens For New Season

Listen to the interview with Sarah Tsitso.    Among the many nonprofit organizations that have struggled financially during the pandemic is the Zoo at Forest Park in Springfield, Massachusetts.      Revenues were greately reduced last season because of a delayed opening date, capacity restrictions, and the cancellation of money-making special events.      The zoo survived the winter when its gates were closed and reopened last weekend for a new season.      WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with the zoo’s executive director Sarah Tsitso.
