SPRINGFIELD — In a brief convergence of sounds on Monday at the Forest Park Zoo, the donkeys brayed, the monkeys screamed and, just outside the main gate, politicians crowed.
Against a backdrop of chattering animals, members of the Springfield legislative delegation and local officials celebrated the awarding of $125,000 in state pandemic assistance to the zoo as it rebounds from a coronavirus-related shutdown.
State Sens. Eric Lesser and Adam Gomez and state Reps. Bud Williams and Carlos Gonzales joined zoo officials for a press briefing to announce funding contained in the state budget for fiscal 2021 that was approved in December. City Councilor Malo Brown was also present.
