The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) could be taking aim at Germany’s public broadcasting networks ahead of the 2021 election, following a proposal from the party’s “Federal Committee of Experts on the Economy, Jobs, Taxes”, calling for their privatisation – a move that could make the country’s media landscape a topic of contention during the 2021 election campaign.
“In the long term, public broadcasters should be gradually privatised,” according to the paper as reported by
Der Spiegel, which first published the story. The proposal further outlines a plan to publicly finance certain content, but not entire networks.
This comes on the heels of a recent debate and subsequent failure to raise Germany’s licence fee, a tax which finances these public news stations. The tax increase had to be ratified by all 16 states, but last week, Saxony-Anhalt’s leader withdrew the bill after opposition from his own party, the CDU, as well as from the far-right AfD.
