When Sons & Daughters opened at the corner of Bush and Powell in 2010, it was a kind of cowboy in the culinary no-man s land that straddles Union Square and Nob Hill. Next door to Uncle Vito s Pizza and around the corner from Lori s Diner, the restaurant, touting innovative twists on Cal-American fare, was an early comer to the neighborhood that would eventually be home to Del Popolo and, a few blocks away, Akiko s and Liholiho Yacht Club.
Nevertheless, its Tendernob address remains an unusual one for the kind of tasting-menu-only experience that has garnered it a Michelin star every year since 2012. Many a commuter has no doubt inched past its modest exterior without ever realizing a guidebook-level meal in progress within, while star-chasing foodies tend to follow the accolades to better known hot spots such as Coi and Benu. Now, a split among the restaurant s partners and an all new menu mean a turning point for the seven-year-old fine dining establishmen

Walking down Haight Street between Scott and Steiner on a Monday in the early evening, a strange scene grabbed our attention: a restaurant that was popping. We repeat, on a
Monday.
The tables on the parklet were socially distanced yet packed. Inside, every available chair (49 of them) is occupied. The bartender barely looks up from his constant mixing of drinks. This is Otra, a newcomer to the Lower Haight that already has the low-key It factor, friendly service, and outside-the-border flavors of a future neighborhood classic think Nopa or Pearl 1601.
It s not surprising, really. Otra is the sophomore project of Anna Sager Cobarruvias and Nick Cobarruvias, the couple behind the Mission s fast favorite, Son s Addition. (Their cauliflower tacos made 7x7 s list of the best takeout in SF.) Like its elder sibling, Otra is also a family affair.

You can t walk far in North Beach without running into a pizzeria or an Italian deli, but locals, especially the multi-generational Italian families who ve lived here for decades, remember the many lost bread bakeries of yore.
For the past two years, famed neighborhood pizzaiolo Tony Gemignani has been working on his own bakery concept with the hope of returning European baking traditions to North Beach. Now open, his Toscano Brothers bakery is serving throwback vibes and classic breads.

Designed by Gemignani himself (the chef designs all his restaurants), the Vallejo Street bakery announces itself with a bright, mint green facade, gilded lettering, and Italian flags.

Welcome to Stella. Your dining room for the evening is actually a 1989 VW camper van. The scene is set with astroturf and folding chairs, a retractable awning will fend against Karl, and kerosene lanterns will keep you cozy.
Your maître d , waiter, sommelier, and busboy are all the same guy. They are also, in fact, the chef. San Francisco foodies will recognize Anthony Strong who not much more than a year ago was crafting delectable pastas at his celebrated restaurant, Prairie. Post-pandemic, he s slinging camp food out of his van in a parking lot. He s fine with thatâand so are the foodies who are paying $190 a pop for the campy Covid-era experience.
