E. L. Meyers Speech and Debate Team seniors Patrick Franckiewicz and Tio Marello were finalists in the News Broadcasting competition at the Pennsylvania High School Speech League state championships held virtually on March 13-14, placing fifth in the final round.
In the competition, Franckiewicz and Marello competed both with scripts they were required to write, covering international and national news and features, as well as with scripts prepared for the contestants by the tournament directors.
Also competing for Meyers at the state championships was junior Angel Estrella, who debated both sides of the resolution, âResolved: The United States ought to guarantee universal child care,â in LincolnâDouglas debate.
Valley Santa saw an increase in requests for toys for children in need this holiday season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but a record number of donors chipped in to help.
Thanks to the many generous donors and a community-wide effort, more than 3,200 children in need throughout Luzerne County received Christmas gifts today.
This marked the 37th year for Valley Santa. a program sponsored by The Citizensâ Voice and Standard-Speaker newspapers, the City of Wilkes-Barre, Boscovâs and M&T Bank.
Attorneys Ruth and Kim Borland have served as coordinators of the program since the beginning and their children, Attorneys Sarah and Joe Borland, serve as active volunteers.
