North Darfur s Kutum still far from secure, Saraf Omra under control

May 7 - 2021 KUTUM / SARAF OMRA Gunmen in Darfur (File photo) A displaced man was killed by militant herders in Kutum, North Darfur on Thursday. Paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of Saraf Omra yesterday. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, activist Yahya El Khumus told Radio Dabanga that Mohamed Sabah was on his way from the Fata Borno camp for the displaced to Kutum town when he was shot dead by militant herders. “It happened in in Khor Jagedeldei, three kilometres from Kutum,” he said. “The perpetrators then fled in north-western direction.” El Khumus criticised the security forces in Kutum. “The joint forces were informed early, but arrived at the scene more than three hours after the attack.”

May 6 - 2021 SARAF OMRA RSF paramilitary and their vehicles (SUNA) A boy was killed in Saraf Omra, North Darfur, in a firefight between armed men and paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Tuesday. In another incident in the same area, six farmers were wounded. Mohamed Khater told Radio Dabanga that the child was fatally hit by a stray bullet when RSF members clashed with a group of armed men on motorbikes wearing a kadamol (a scarf covering the face). The RSF tried to take control over the gunmen on motorbikes. As they tried to resist the RSF heavy gunfire erupted, which caused panic in the town and led to the closure of the local market. The RSF managed to seize a number of motors whilst the gunmen broke the windows of several RSF vehicles.

Food Security Monitoring Food System (FSMS), Darfur Q1 2021 Format Highlights The food security situation was a mixed picture in North Darfur, with the prevalence of food insecure households increasing the most in the mixed cluster of Kebkabiya and Saraf Omra (from 55 to 92 percent). The IDPs in Mellit and Abassi cluster also experienced a stark increase (from 48 to 75 percent), as did the refugees in Al lait (from 43 to 71 percent). In the other clusters, the prevalence of food insecurity decreased but remains high at over 60 percent. The prevalence of households with poor food consumption remains high among the IDPs in El Fasher, Zamzam, Al Salam and Abu Shouk at 50 percent, although this is a slight decrease compared to the previous round (Q1 2020).

April 6 - 2021 EL GENEINA Smoke could be seen to rise from El Geneina as tribal fighting continues (social media) The United Nations revealed today that 56 people have been killed and 132 others were injured in the continuing clashes that erupted on Saturday evening in the state’s capital El Geneina. The wali (governor) of West Darfur expects a state of emergency and a curfew to be imposed in the city. Thousands are fleeing the fighting and at least one rocket-propelled grenade hit a hospital whilst another hit a UN compound. People from El Geneina told Radio Dabanga that the sound of heavy fighting and explosions continued for the second day in a row yesterday. They said that the sound came from southern, eastern, and western areas of the city and that houses are burnt in the areas around the Kerending camps.
