As reported by Radio Dabanga last week, the site was ransacked and ‘levelled’ by looters on February 17, just weeks after it was handed over to the Sudanese government. In a statement via his spokesman from New York today, Guterres laments that “at a time when community needs in Sudan are increasingly pressing, the site was intended to serve as a vocational training centre; unknown assailants have dashed that opportunity”.

One killed in Darfur robbery attempt

February 24 - 2021 JEBEL MARRA / SARAF OMRA (file photo) One person was killed and three were wounded in an armed attack on a vehicle carrying nine passengers from El Fasher (North Darfur) to Nyala (South Darfur). The robbery attempt took place in Jebel Marra near Shangil Tobaya last Saturday. According to the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Darfur, Lt Col Mubarak Mohamed Abu Zeid, the armed group fired extensively at the vehicle. One of the wounded is in a serious condition and has been taken to El Fasher for treatment. He also said that one of the attackers was killed during the clash. Two of the alleged perpetrators have been arrested by now, he added.

Witnesses from Saraf Omra told Radio Dabanga that the looters specifically targeted the UNAMID installations and that the site was “levelled with the ground”. All buildings and offices used by the Jordanian battalion that was in charge of the site before it handed over to the Sudanese government on January 21 have reportedly been destroyed.

Fear of cholera outbreak in West Darfur Format At a press conference in Khartoum yesterday, Ismail El Taj, a leading member of the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), warned of cholera and measles outbreaks in El Geneina s shelters of newly displaced people.
