"In a piece written Sept. 10 for the Sentinel, county school superintendents joined a statewide chorus painting a dismal picture of chronic absenteeism on a dramatic rise," the Editorial Board writes. "According to the superintendents, the rate of chronic absenteeism in Santa Cruz County tripled from 10.4% in the 2018-19 school year to 31% in 2022-23, similar to the trend for students in all California’s public schools which report absenteeism numbers at an all-time high and more than three times the pre-pandemic rate."
