Support these three candidates
To the editor:
In this upcoming city council election, Sanibel voters have the opportunity to form a council that can strengthen our communities most important tenet, “Sanctuary Island.” Currently we have in place two excellent leaders who bolster that core value in Vice Mayor Holly Smith and Councilmember Richard Johnson. We have seen Smith’s extraordinary work ethic to keep Sanibel safe and healthy, as well as her protection of our natural resources. During this pandemic we have seen Johnson’s tireless efforts in support of our local retailers, restaurants and resorts. The Johnson and Bailey families have worked tirelessly to conserve our island culture and lifestyle.
Meet the candidates running for three Sanibel City Council seats
By TIFFANY REPECKI / trepecki@breezenewspapers.com - | Feb 9, 2021
Sanibel voters will have several choices to pick from in the city’s upcoming March 2 election.
Six people are campaigning to take up the seats currently held by Mayor Mick Denham, who is not seeking re-election, and Councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench, who were appointed late last year to replace former Mayor Kevin Ruane and Councilmember Jason Maughan for the interim.
The pool of candidates includes Mary Bondurant, Scott Crater, Tim Drobnyk, John Henshaw, Jason Maughan and Mike Miller. Elections held for Sanibel City Council seats are non-partisan races.
Miller will have my vote

To the editor:
We should all be pleased and encouraged that Mike Miller is a candidate for the Sanibel City Council. Mike brings a rare combination of qualifications that we need on the council now.
In many respects Sanibel is and hopefully will remain the small town contemplated in the Sanibel Vision Statement. We don’t have chain stores, fast food restaurants or high rise hotels on the beach but we’re not the same Sanibel we used to be either. Sanibel now has a $60 million-plus annual budget, millions of dollars in pension liability, capitol projects, voted debt to manage and operating expenses to pay. On top of that we’re facing an ongoing threat to our water quality, a pandemic that is out of control and the prospect of rising sea levels caused by climate change.
