Exports of chemical or dangerous goods are being hampered due to a lack of minimum facilities in all inland container depots (ICDs) of the country, according to exporters.
The export of chemical and combustible products from Bangladesh has been halted once again as the only depot designated by the Chattogram customs authority to handle dangerous goods has failed to maintain the minimum safety standards.
The BM Container Depot fire incident, largely blamed on its owners' negligence, has shaken up the entire chemical producing sector with hydrogen peroxide exporters incurring massive losses in the aftermath of the deadly 4 June blaze that has claimed 49 lives so far. Hydrogen peroxide exporters fear they may lose customers as the export is caught up in uncertainty with shipping
The chemical, produced in about six factories in Bangladesh, is exported to 14 countries including Vietnam, China, Korea, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Malaysia
