Thomas Gilbert has spent almost 40 years behind bars for the murders of Sandy Jo Hogue, 19, of Akron and Joanne Shafer, 15, of Stow. The Ohio Parole Board said “release of the inmate into society would create undue risk to public safety”. On August 12th, 1981, Hogue was working at an all-night convenience store in Akron, when Gilbert dragged her out of the store, raped and murdered her.

Summit County prosecutors believe he should stay there. Gilbert was convicted of kidnapping, rape, and murder and sentenced to 55 years to life in prison. Police say he killed two women in Summit County. The Ohio Parole Board has scheduled a hearing in February to consider whether Gilbert should be paroled. “This is one of the most violent offenders that has ever come through this court system,” said Tania Nemer, a community outreach prosecutor for the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.
