Family of child suffering brain injury fears Gascón s new policies may only give child s abuser slap on wrist
New LA County DA George Gascón s sweeping policy changes continue to alarm families of abuse victims.
LOS ANGELES - Great bodily injury, or GBI, is a term used in criminal cases where the victim was severely injured and a defendant is charged with a special circumstance allegation which adds more time in prison if they’re found guilty.
But under newly-elected District Attorney, George Gascón, Special Circumstance Allegations and Enhancements are no longer being allowed. In the case of baby Amber, this could mean the difference between years in prison and probation.

LOS ANGELES - Councilman Paul Koretz filed a resolution on Tuesday in opposition of Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón s recent directive to remove sentence enhancements, particularly when prosecuting hate crimes.
Gascón issued a set of special directives when he was sworn into office on Dec. 7 designed to reduce recidivism and the number of people incarcerated.
One directive eliminated all sentence enhancements. While many of his special directives are well-intentioned, I believe he missed the mark when he eliminated special enhancements for hate crimes being prosecuted in the county, Koretz said.

Immediately upon taking office George Gascon announced that he would be doing away with the death penalty, cash bail and special circumstances enhancements which add additional jail time in certain cases. Now we’re starting to see what that will mean in some actual cases. The families of the victims are not happy about it.

George Gascon’s reforms, I’ve confirmed his office is trying to dismiss all enhancements & special circumstances against the alleged double murderer/cop killer accused of shooting LASD deputy Gilbert Solano in the back of his head. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - District Attorney George Gascon may be facing resistance within his own office to his plans to dismiss gang and other allegations designed to lead to longer sentences.
A former Los Angeles County prosecutor who now represents the family of a man killed in a crash by a driver allegedly under the influence of nitrous oxide is fighting moves by Gascon to drop great bodily injury allegations in that case and at least one other.
Attorney Sam Dordulian contends that there is “bedlam in the D.A. s office, and prosecutors are reeling from Gascon s announcement that he would dismiss sentencing enhancements and institute a sweeping set of policy changes, including eliminating cash bail.
