Today is june, a day that commemorates the abolition of slavery in texas and more generally throughout the confederacy. The news with the emancipation proclamation did not reach texas for two years so all enslaved people knew they were free despite lincolns emancipation. Slavery was a crime against humanity, one whose impacts we as a society continue to grapple with today. This year marks the 400th anniversary of the first african slaves being brought to america. Slaveries of our nations first original sin. Our constitution protected it and various compromise
And this is an everyday occurrence in america. I have the privilege of having leaders in my community who over the decades have given me strength. One of them was a woman on the fifth floor of the projects. Building in which i lived whose son was murdered. She taught me hope is the action conviction. Despiair wont have the last word, but when i come back on a day like today, i wonder if other senators had people shot like that in their neighborhood, if it wouldnt be a headline. When people are shot and killed, the world seems to keep going on. And so i wonder about having the last word. What happens when the last word is no words. When its silence .
