The landlord of a man on trial for murder and attempted murder of his ex-wife said he was a good man who visited his daughter after work.
The defence is calling witnesses in the trial for Soafa Niumagumagu who is charged with the attempted murder of his former wife Puapuaga Matamua, murder of Sagaia Kaisala, 32, and assault with a weapon against Abdul Riyaz in June 2019.

Soafa Niumagumagu has denied the charges. The court has previously heard from a number of witnesses who said the defendant had stabbed his ex-wife, and Kaisala had gone to her aid. Niumagumagu then ran Kaisala down with his car, and she fell to the ground “like a ragdoll”, worker David Gray said. Kisha told the court a number of Kaisala’s bones were broken, including vertebrae in her neck, rib, pelvis, her left arm, and pelvis. There were lacerations to her liver and she had multiple brain bleeds. Under cross-examination, Kisha said the lethal injury was a spinal cord transection – the separation of the head from the neck.

Sagaia Kaisala died after being run over in Māngere Bridge while trying to help a woman being attacked by her husband. On Monday, Detective Sergeant Simon Jeffries told the court he arrived at a Papatoetoe residential address where Niumagumagu had already been located and arrested for assault. The defendant was advised of his rights before they travelled to Manukau Police Station. Jeffries told the defendant a woman had died and two people were in a serious condition in hospital after the incident. “I didn’t mean to do this,” Niumagumagu allegedly said, emotional. Niumagumagu allegedly asked the police officer if his ex-wife was alright, and called her a bitch.
