Māngere Bridge death: Man guilty of manslaughter after running good Samaritan down

Givealittle/Supplied Sagaia Kaisala died after being run over in Māngere Bridge while trying to help a colleague who was being attacked. “I didn’t want to die, I want to fight with my life,” she said earlier in the trial. “I was calling someone to help me . I tried to kick him out from me and I know I’m going to die that day.” Niumagumagu then ran Matamua’s colleague Abdul Riyaz down with his car, the court heard. Riyaz said he “flew over the car”, and the next thing he knew he was sitting at Middlemore Hospital with blood on his head.

Māngere Bridge murder trial: Woman hit by car would have died 'within seconds'

DAVID WHITE/STUFF Soafa Niumagumagu has denied the charges. The court has previously heard from a number of witnesses who said the defendant had stabbed his ex-wife, and Kaisala had gone to her aid. Niumagumagu then ran Kaisala down with his car, and she fell to the ground “like a ragdoll”, worker David Gray said. Kisha told the court a number of Kaisala’s bones were broken, including vertebrae in her neck, rib, pelvis, her left arm, and pelvis. There were lacerations to her liver and she had multiple brain bleeds. Under cross-examination, Kisha said the lethal injury was a spinal cord transection – the separation of the head from the neck.
