ALBANY, N.Y. (WKBW) â New York announced it plans to alter mask guidelines for schools on Monday.
New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker issued a letter to CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky about the state s concern over the consistency of the CDC guidance on mask wearing between schools and summer camps.
For K-12 schools the CDC currently recommends a requirement for âconsistent and correct use of well-fitting face masks with proper filtration by all students, teachers, and staff . Zucker says it does not make a distinction between indoors versus outdoors and does not address those who are vaccinated.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) â State Supreme Court Justice Emilio Colaiacovo ruled Thursday the Williamsville and Orchard Park school districts must offer full-time in-person learning to students.
The districts must offer full-time in-person learning beginning Monday and continue to offer remote/hybrid learning to those who want to continue with the current model.
Judge Colaiacovo issued a temporary order last week that ordered so long as community transmission rates of COVID-19 are at or near 100 per 100,000 people, the Williamsville and Orchard Park school districts may return to full-time in-person learning.

ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. (WKBW) â Supreme Court Judge Emilio Colaiacovo has ordered the New York State Department of Health to revisit its school social distancing guidelines by Friday.
Parents are suing both the Orchard Park and Williamsville School Districts to return to school in person full time in Judge Colaiavcovo s court.
Both school districts said they can not accommodate all students with six feet of social distance, but can with three.

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WKBW) â Friday, New York State released updated guidance regarding in-person learning. The state s updated guidance said schools can reduce the minimum physical distance between students in classrooms from six feet to three feet.
On March 19, the CDC issued a new recommendation that with face coverings students at K-12 schools should maintain a distance of at least three feet in classroom settings.
Monday, the Williamsville Central School District released its plan for a return to in-person learning in response to the new state guidance.
Buffalo Public Schools provide update on Phase III and Phase IV of reopening

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) â Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash provided an update on Phase III and Phase IV of reopening Thursday.
In a letter to board members and the BPS community, Cash said:
Covid-19 infections are rising again across the region, a more contagious variant is spreading, and we are working to recover from a malicious cyberattack. Those significant challenges notwithstanding, I have directed staff to bring back all remaining high school opt-in students on April 26th. Remaining elementary opt-in students will come back on May 10th. We will discuss further details at our April 14th Board Work Session and defer to updated recommendations from our Medical Director and local health experts.
