taken them, so they re now four years behind spacex. i think now that they have gotten this flight off, i agree with derrick, this was a critical mission not just for nasa, but for boeing to demonstrate, to give them confidence to demonstrate they have the capability to do this. we re far from complete. we have got to get off the centar, do some tests on the cst 100 over the next day and tomorrow hopefully we ll have a perfect docking, spend eight days on the international space station and then undock and come home. the ultimate test is how does the spacecraft handle the intense heat and pressure of re-entry, and then as the landing out in the desert, does it go the way we want it to go. only once they have touched down out in the desert ten days from now or eight days from now will we be able to take our breath and say we had a successful flight. such a good point as we watch these live images and they continue their mission, their journey into space at this very moment.
the spacex spacecraft gives nasa a lot of flexibility in that there are two different kinds of spacecraft, they operate differently. but they can do the same job very, very well. and that allows nasa to have some room to begin to build additional capability on as we build into the artemis program heading out to the moon. general, of course, spacex has been flying missions with astronauts for years. why is spacex so far ahead? well, the primarien that spacex is so far ahead is that boeing on their initial flight actually suffered some software problems and other issues that caused them to overuse the propellant and so they were unable to get into a safe orbit that would have taken them to the international space station. they have had a number of other maybe quality issues and it has
the primary responsibility that they have is to keep the station up at a safe orbit. we could replace them. we d have to have a quick program to build another signas or modify a dragon for space x and boost the space station back up, but in order to do that, we would essentially have to take over the station and the russians would have to agree to leave in an orderly fashion and turn the lights out in their part of the station, if they went. in other words, it is technically feasible to take over the space station without the russians. politically? probably not. most likely there is no down side for them right now to stay aboard the station and take care of the station. they get photo ops and publicity working with american
