There are many retro NES-styled games all over the Xbox storefront, and while most of these games are generally good, for the most part they are largely derivative of the sources they draw inspiration from. It’s not often when an indie developer uses gameplay and presentation conventions from yesteryear to create something that not only feels unique, but also modern at the same time. Astalon: Tears of the Earth lands on Xbox during a very busy release cycle where there is no shortage of games; indie or otherwise. And yet this may just be one of the sleeper indie hits of 2021.

There’s much hype surrounding the release of Astalon: Tears of the Earth on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC, with players across the globe holding out for the chance to get hands-on with the long-awaited 2D action platformer. We put ourselves in that camp, so when the opportunity arose to spend time with the team at LABS Works in order to find out more about the game, we jumped at the chance.  Hi, could you please introduce yourself. What is your role at LABS Works and on the creation of Astalon: Tears of the Earth? Hello! My name is Matt Kap, and I’m the final boss of LABS Works, as well as the game designer, lead artist, and composer of “Astalon: Tears of the Earth”! Nice to meet you :)!

Astalon: Tears of the Earth brings action platforming to Switch in June A charming retro action experience is on the way to Switch. Publisher Dangen Entertainment and developer LABS Works have announced a June 3, 2021 release date for Astalon: Tears of the Earth on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s a single-player action platformer with a cute 8-bit visual style that will retail for $19.99, and if the style of its slick promotional art looks familiar at all, it’s because it was created by Dragon Half manga creator Ryusuke Mita. Like in the Astalon: Tears of the Earth is character swapping, although it seems you will have to find a campfire to make a switch. You can swap among Arias, a fighter with higher defense and short-range sword attacks; Algus, a wizard with magic bolts that can travel through walls; and Kyuli, a rogue with a long-range bow and the ability to jump off of walls.
