A glimpse of America through the artwork of Scituate students

Wicked Local At the beginning of the pandemic last year, Kara Vecchi came across the VFW Auxiliary “Illustrating America” contest and decided to enter. “I enjoyed researching individuals who, to me, represented America,” the 13-year-old Gates Middle School student said.  “My entry included research on George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., Helen Keller, and Susan B. Anthony.  I saw that the VFW was sponsoring the Illustrating America contest again this year, and I knew I wanted to submit an entry.” When she sees the American Flag, Kara thinks of the Star Spangled Banner, she said. “I included the flag in last year s entry and wanted to include it in this year s entry, which I did standing proudly in front of the White House. When I picture the White House and Washington D.C, I think of the heart of our country and the home of our president. To me, my entry illustrates America.”
